For twenty-five years, Under the Volcano has brought together extraordinary
writers and journalists from around the world.
Under the Circumstances!
When we migrated to Zoom during the pandemic, we renamed ourselves “Under the Circumstances”! But we survived and, since 2022, when we resumed in person, Under the Volcano has reclaimed not just its name but its reputation as one of the world’s most innovative writing residencies.
Every January since 2003 we’ve hosted a two-week immersion that welcomes fifty writers and journalists from across the Americas and around the world to a series of high-powered masterclasses with award-winning instructors.

Thanks to the support of our donors, we’ve been able to subsidize more than half our participants.

On the eve of our 25th anniversary season, we often find ourselves reaching for the Spanish phrase “¡qué milagro!”
The real miracle is the talent we’ve been able to identify and power up over these years and the steady stream of books, articles, poems and prizes our alumni generate soon after taking part in Under the Volcano.

We’ve run for twenty-five years on passion and a half-tank of gas.
We now need to switch to the kind of renewable energy that will allow Under the Volcano to grow organically for the next twenty-five.
