For twenty-five years, Under the Volcano has brought together extraordinary
writers and journalists from around the world.

When we migrated to Zoom during the pandemic, we renamed ourselves “Under the Circumstances”! But we survived and, since 2022, when we resumed in person, Under the Volcano has reclaimed not just its name but its reputation as one of the world’s most innovative writing residencies.
Every January since 2003 we’ve hosted a two-week immersion that now welcomes fifty writers and journalists from across the Americas and around the world to a series of high-powered masterclasses with award-winning instructors.
STAYING TRUE TO OUR VISION
Talent, not ability to pay.
Thanks to the support of our donors, we’ve been able to subsidize more than half of our participants, including

This means we’ve stayed true to our original vision of selecting the most gifted candidates and creating a diverse community based solely on talent and shared values, not ability to pay.
The Real Miracle
The real miracle is the talent we’ve been able to identify and power up over these years and the steady stream of books, articles, poems and prizes our alumni generate soon after taking part in Under the Volcano.
