I wrote about rebel uprisings, natural catastrophes, and political crises across Latin America and the Caribbean for decades as a correspondent for The Associated Press, filing breaking news with datelines that included Santiago, Cuba; Port-au-Prince, Haiti; Estelí, Nicaragua; and San Cristobal de las Casas, Mexico. I’ve now settled in southern Arizona’s borderlands, where I’m turning my focus to deeper reportage and longform literary journalism. I’m drawn to the border, especially the migratory corridors traversed for millennia by humans, from the ancient Tohono O’odham, to the expedition of Spanish explorer Francisco Vázquez de Coronado, to today’s Central American asylum seekers largely shut out by the Trump administration’s immigration crackdown. In Tepoztlán, I hope for the same immersive experience that inspired my work as a 2010 Nieman fellow at Harvard University and later as a student in the MFA program in Creative Nonfiction at Goucher College. Durante décadas, escribí sobre levantamientos rebeldes, catástrofes naturales y crisis políticas en Latinoamérica y el Caribe como corresponsal de The Associated Press, presentando noticias de última hora fechadas en lugares como Santiago de Cuba; Puerto Príncipe, Haití; Estelí, Nicaragua; y San Cristóbal de las Casas, México. Ahora me he establecido en la zona fronteriza del sur de Arizona, donde me estoy enfocando en reportajes más profundos y periodismo literario. Me atrae la frontera, especialmente los corredores migratorios que la humanidad ha recorrido durante milenios, desde los antiguos Tohono O’odham hasta la expedición del explorador español Francisco Vázquez de Coronado, y los solicitantes de asilo centroamericanos de hoy, en gran medida excluidos por la represión migratoria de la administración de Trump.
