Jonathan Levi is the author of the novels Septimania and A Guide for the Perplexed. His plays and operas have been performed around the world, from the National Theatre of Georgia to a cow pasture in the Netherlands. A founding editor of Granta, his journalism has been published in many major U.S. newspapers and magazines including The New York Times, The Los Angeles Times, The Nation, and Conde Nast Traveler. He is the Director of the Gabriel García Márquez Fellowship in Cultural Journalism in Cartagena, Colombia and has taught both cultural journalism and the Manuscript Seminar at Under the Volcano over the past decade.
