A GUIDED RESIDENCY for WRITERS & JOURNALISTS
Our 20th anniversary season combines the best of our in-person program and the virtual community we built during the pandemic.
As a participant in one of our selective master classes you’ll be part of a unique group of committed writers from around the world. Together with accomplished peers, you’ll read and critique each other’s work, with individual mentoring from some of today’s most exciting writers.
BUT UTV IS ABOUT MORE THAN JUST MASTER CLASSES.
It’s a community, a writing residency and a lit fest rolled into one.
In addition to attending twice-weekly master classes in your chosen genre, you’ll attend our far-reaching Community of the Imagination conversations and exclusive craft talks and take part in weekly Open Mics and all-group gatherings in Tepoztlán’s charming Sombra del Sabino bookstore café.
If you come to Tepoztlán, you’ll experience life in one of Mexico’s most alluring villages, but if you choose to join us from afar, we’ll bring the village to you.
HOW IT WORKS
The program is front-loaded with an opening week that includes an all-group orientation dinner, an inaugural weekend featuring distinguished scientists, journalists and writers, two master classes in your genre, an individual consultation with your master class instructor and a choice of craft talks. Week #1 ends with an Open Mic and a social evening where we can all unwind and take a deep breath.
WEEKS TWO & THREE
During the second and third weeks participants will focus on revision and generating new work. Master classes will continue to meet twice weekly, with participants encouraged to devote significant time to moving forward on their projects. We will continue to offer optional craft talks, as well as Open Mics and gatherings that bring the Volcanista community together.
THE BIG PICTURE
We encourage you to view the overall program as a three-week retreat (with great company!) and to build blocks of writing time into your agenda for January 2023.
THREE WAYS TO ATTEND:
1. Join us in Tepoztlán for Week #1 and return home to do Weeks #2 and #3 online.
2. Join us in Tepoztlán for week #1 and stay on in the village for Weeks #2 and #3.
3. Attend the entire program virtually, with a live connection to your master class and interaction with the others in your group.
