Happy 20th Birthday to Under the Volcano!
On January 6th, Under the Volcano 2023 welcomes its twentieth cohort of accomplished poets, novelists, essayists and reporters to Tepoztlán as part of a unique community of writers from across the English- and Spanish-speaking worlds.
We’re excited and amazed! Since 2003, we’ve not only survived but magically grown from a small fiction retreat to a highly selective multi-genre residency that spans more than twenty countries. Our hundreds of alumni have published dozens of novels, poetry collections and groundbreaking articles in top news media, both in print and online.
Please join us in-person or via Facebook Live as we launch this special season with three weeks of conversations and readings designed to inspire and challenge all of us—both writers and readers—in a time where words matter more than ever.
January Events at UTV 2023
In addition to our newest Community of the Imagination, a series of linked conversations on January 7th and 14th, with distinguished writers, journalists and scientists, we’ve added a weekday afternoon track of live readings and interviews on Mondays, Tuesdays and Wednesdays that will bring an added dimension to our schedule of morning master classes.
Confirmed participants in this year’s UTV include evolutionary biologist Valeria Souza, physicist Antonio Sarmiento, novelists Magda Bogin, Raquel Castro, Alberto Chimal, Jennifer Clement, Reyna Grande, Alex Jennings, Devi Laskar, Jonathan Levi, Sabrina Orah Mark, Verónica Murguía, Julie Otsuka, Elizabeth Rosner, Aysegül Savas and Luisa Valenzuela; poets Ben Clark, Elisa Díaz Castelo, Keetje Kuipers and Javier Zamora, and journalists Alfredo Corchado, Angela Kocherga, Tyrone Beason, Elisabeth Malkin, Steve Fisher, Keith Dannemiller, Javier Garza, Marcela Turati, Tom Huang and Laura Castellanos.
