Born and raised in a college town in Southern Kentucky, Tyrone Beason is a currently a reporter for the Los Angeles Times who’s been covering the 2020 presidential campaign. Previously, he was a Seattle Times social issues columnist and Pacific NW magazine reporter. He has covered a variety of beats but has always sought out characters and aspects of life that often go unnoticed, underreported or too narrowly framed. He was a 2013 fellow with the International Center for Journalists, reporting on the myths and realities of South Africa’s reputation as a safe-haven for gays and lesbians in sub-Saharan Africa. He’s also been recognized for his stories and essays focusing on race and identity, as well as his reporting on the migrant crisis along the U.S./Mexico border.
