Soy periodista y feminista, nacida en el norte de México. Especializada en derechos humanos, medio ambiente y género, actualmente me desempeño como reportera en El Sol de Tijuana. He sido becaria del Border Hub; formé parte de la iniciativa ¡Exprésate! del International Women’s Media Foundation; en 2021 participé en el Programa Piloto Apoyo al Periodismo de Investigación (PPAPI). Actualmente soy integrante de la 9na. generación de la Red LATAM de Jóvenes Periodistas de Distintas Latitudes y Factual. 

Mis prácticas incluyen al periodismo como una herramienta social, capaz de incidir en el acceso a la justicia, transparencia y rendición de cuentas. Crecí en una librería leyendo los periódicos que mi abuelo me compartía y escuchando de mi mamá el Conde de Montecristo antes de dormir.

I’m a journalist and feminist born in northern Mexico, specializing in human rights, environmental issues and gender. I currently work as a staff writer for El Sol de Tijuana. I’ve been a fellow at Border Hub, took part in the ¡Exprésate! initiative of the International Women’s Media Foundation (IWMF) and, in 2021, participated in the Pilot Program for Supporting Investigative Journalism (PPAPI). I’m also a member of the Red LATAM of Young Journalists of Distintas Latitudes and Factual.

My work embraces journalism as a social tool capable of influencing access to justice, transparency and accountability. I grew up in a bookstore, reading the newspapers my grandfather shared with me and listening to my mother read The Count of Monte Cristo before bed.

Writing of Witness with Jennifer Clement

I’m an Iranian-American writer, editor, and anthropologist with a PhD from the University of Chicago. My writing focuses on power and collective memory in the contemporary Middle East. I’m a postgraduate researcher at El Colegio de México in Mexico City where I am currently working on a book about the lessons that grassroots resistance in Iran can teach people around the world fighting authoritarianism and imagining alternatives to the contemporary global order. I am an editor of Ajam Media Collective, an online platform that highlights transnational histories of culture, society, and politics in West, Central, and South Asia, for which I have curated art residencies forging contemporary links across the region’s borders at the Lahore Biennale (2020), the Indus Conclave (2025), and the Pakistan National College of Arts Triennale (2025). I previously worked as a journalist in Bethlehem, Palestine and continue to cover events in the region, including the 2022 Woman Life Freedom protests and recent Israeli attacks on the West Bank, Lebanon, and Iran. I received my MA in Middle Eastern Studies from Harvard University and my BA in International Relations and Urban Development from the University of Southern California.

Mi obra se centra en el poder y la memoria colectiva en el Medio Oriente contemporáneo. Soy investigador de posgrado en El Colegio de México, en la Ciudad de México, donde actualmente trabajo en un libro sobre las lecciones que la resistencia popular en Irán pueden enseñarle a quienes luchan contra el autoritarismo a través del mundo e imaginan alternativas al orden global actual. Soy editor de Ajam Media Collective, una plataforma digital que destaca las historias transnacionales de la cultura, la sociedad y la política en Asia Occidental, Central y Meridional. Para esta plataforma, he organizado residencias artísticas que forjan vínculos contemporáneos que trascienden fronteras en la Bienal de Lahore (2020), el Cónclave del Indo (2025) y la Trienal del Colegio Nacional de Artes de Pakistán (2025). Alicia Mares es Magíster en Creación Literaria por la Universidad Pompeu Fabra. Ha publicado tres colecciones de cuentos, Cocodrilario (Horror Vacui, 2022), Tornasol (Ocelote, 2024), Helado de flor de cempasúchil (La Tinta del Silencio, 2025) y un poemario, Mudanzas a castillos de arena (Valparaíso Ediciones, 2024). Ha sido becaria del FONCA (2022-2023) y del PECDA Tlaxcala. Resultó finalista del XXXV Premio Ana María Matute de Narrativa de Mujeres. Este año fue galardonada con el II Premio Nacional de Literatura Fantástica de la Universidad de Sonora y el XLI Premio Nacional de Cuento Fantástico y de Ciencia Ficción. Tiene siete gatos y sueña con hablar chino mandarín fluido.

Alicia Mares has an MA in Literary Creation from the Universitat Pompeu Fabra, in Barcelona. She has seven cats and hopes someday to speak fluent Mandarin Chinese.

Soy licenciada en periodismo y trabajé seis años como reportera para la organización Periodistas de a Pie. Colaboré en las bases de datos y análisis para el reportaje ‘Cadena de Mando’ el cual fue galardonado con el primer Premio de Periodismo Javier Valdez Cárdenas y escribí la pieza ‘Aborto: Médicos inquisidores toman postura’ el cual ganó Mención Especial en el Concurso Género y Justicia en la categoría de Reportaje Escrito. Me gusta la fotografía y el baile. Actualmente estoy trabajando diferentes perspectivas de la memoria en mi primer libro de cuentos.

I have a degree in journalism and worked for six years as a reporter for the organization Periodistas de a Pie. I contributed to the databases and analysis for the report “Cadena de Mando”, which won the first Javier Valdez Cárdenas Journalism Prize, and wrote the piece “Aborto: Médicos inquisidores toman postura”, which received a Special Mention in the Gender and Justice Contest in the Written Report category. I enjoy photography and dancing. I’m currently working on different perspectives of memory for my first book of short stories.

Escritora, viajera y tarotista originalmente del Estado de Morelos. Durante ocho años, pedaleé en bicicleta por Centroamérica, navegué en velero por las Bahamas, hice senderismo en el Círculo Ártico y escalé en roca en Estados Unidos y Canadá mientras escribía mi novela. En mi obra, me interesa jugar con las ucronías y el realismo mágico para imaginar una historia alternativa sobre la conquista y colonia de México. Actualmente, imparto talleres de escritura creativa, leo el tarot, guío expediciones de escalada en Oaxaca y me emociona sobremanera formar parte de la comunidad de Under the Volcano.

Writer, traveler, and tarot reader originally from the state of Morelos. For eight years, I biked through Central America, sailed through the Bahamas, hiked in the Arctic Circle, and rock climbed in the United States and Canada while writing my novel. In my work, I am interested in playing with uchronia and magical realism, to imagine an alternate history about the conquest and colonization of Mexico. Currently, I teach creative writing workshops, do tarot readings, lead climbing expeditions in Oaxaca, and am extremely excited to join the Under the Volcano community.

I wrote about rebel uprisings, natural catastrophes, and political crises across Latin America and the Caribbean for decades as a correspondent for The Associated Press, filing breaking news with datelines that included Santiago, Cuba; Port-au-Prince, Haiti; Estelí, Nicaragua; and San Cristobal de las Casas, Mexico. I’ve now settled in southern Arizona’s borderlands, where I’m turning my focus to deeper reportage and longform literary journalism. I’m drawn to the border, especially the migratory corridors traversed for millennia by humans, from the ancient Tohono O’odham, to the expedition of Spanish explorer Francisco Vázquez de Coronado, to today’s Central American asylum seekers largely shut out by the Trump administration’s immigration crackdown. In Tepoztlán, I hope for the same immersive experience that inspired my work as a 2010 Nieman fellow at Harvard University and later as a student in the MFA program in Creative Nonfiction at Goucher College. Looking forward to meeting you all soon!

Durante décadas, escribí sobre levantamientos rebeldes, catástrofes naturales y crisis políticas en Latinoamérica y el Caribe como corresponsal de The Associated Press, presentando noticias de última hora fechadas en lugares como Santiago de Cuba; Puerto Príncipe, Haití; Estelí, Nicaragua; y San Cristóbal de las Casas, México. Ahora me he establecido en la zona fronteriza del sur de Arizona, donde me estoy enfocando en reportajes más profundos y periodismo literario. Me atrae la frontera, especialmente los corredores migratorios que la humanidad ha recorrido durante milenios, desde los antiguos Tohono O’odham hasta la expedición del explorador español Francisco Vázquez de Coronado, y los solicitantes de asilo centroamericanos de hoy, en gran medida excluidos por la represión migratoria de la administración de Trump. I’m a writer, reporter, and radio producer based in the desert Southwest. Currently, I cover rural and border communities for the magazine High Country News, and I’m an editor for an audio magazine called Signal Hill. I grew up in Washington, DC, and got my start in journalism working at the local paper in a small Alaskan fishing town. More recently, I spent three years covering the small border communities of Far West Texas at Marfa Public Radio, where I produced an award-winning podcast about rural reproductive care. My work has also appeared in or on NPR, Radiolab, the Washington Post, Mother Jones, and the LA Review of Books, among other places. I’m interested in community media, oral history, and the role of narrative in helping people reckon with violence. In my free time, I’m very slowly learning to play the bass. 

Soy escritora, periodista, y productora de radio basada en el desierto del Suroeste de los Estados Unidos. Actualmente, escribo sobre comunidades rurales y fronterizas para la revista High Country News, y soy editora de una revista sonora llamada Signal Hill. Crecí en Washington, D.C., y mi primer trabajo como periodista fue en el periódico local de un pequeño pueblo pesquero en Alaska. Poetry with Paul Muldoon

I am a retired lawyer who served as a lecturer in law, administrative law judge and arbitrator, and as a senior official in a New York City government agency and in a public service organization for dispute resolution. I have written poems and plays over the years, with six published books. Most recently, I have had two full-length plays published this year. One is a family drama, and the other is a highly topical verse play set in archaic Greece at the beginning of recorded history. I am currently putting together another book of poems, circulating a volume of my short plays, and working to complete another full-length verse play. Born in a steel manufacturing city in the Pittsburgh USA area and heavily influenced by the industrial landscape, I have lived most of my life in New York City and am now retired in Mexico with my wife. We have two grown daughters.

A little-known fact is that my verse play “Electra” was performed on a former railroad loading platform at the then-abandoned Brooklyn Army Terminal, in a desolate atrium under a shattered glass ceiling.

Soy un abogado jubilado que fué profesor de derecho, juez administrativo, árbitro, alto funcionario en una agencia gubernamental de la ciudad de Nueva York y trabajó en una organización de servicio público dedicada a la resolución de conflictos. He escrito poemas y obras de teatro a lo largo de los años, con seis libros publicados. Este año se publicaron dos de mis obras de teatro de larga duración. Una es un drama familiar y la otra, una obra en verso ambientada en la Grecia arcaica, al comienzo de la historia escrita. Actualmente estoy preparando otro libro de poemas, distribuyendo un volumen de mis obras cortas y finalizando otra obra en verso de larga duración. Nacido en una ciudad siderúrgica cerca de Pittsburgh, Estados Unidos, y profundamente influenciado por el paisaje industrial, he vivido la mayor parte de mi vida en la ciudad de Nueva York y ahora estoy jubilado en México con mi esposa. Tenemos dos hijas adultas.

Un dato poco conocido es que mi obra en verso «Electra» se representó en un antiguo andén de carga de ferrocarril en la entonces abandonada Terminal del Ejército de Brooklyn, en un atrio desolado bajo un techo de cristal roto.

I am a retired immigration lawyer and law professor from New York, now living in San Miguel de Allende in Mexico with my husband. I was also previously the co-author of several annually-updated books on immigration law and policy, and the author of hundreds of articles on immigration law and global mobility that were published in a variety of legal, academic and human resources publications, as well as a couple in Salon and The Hill. I was the Executive Producer of “Las Abogadas: Attorneys on The Front Lines of The Migrant Crisis,” a documentary film released in 2022 about women attorneys defending the rights of asylum seekers at the U.S.-Mexico border. My current writing project is a biography of my late Dutch Jewish stepmother, who spent three of her teenage years in hiding from the Nazis during World War II. 

Little-known facts about me: I traveled to Cuba during the height of the U.S. embargo, snuck into East Berlin in the early 1980s by entering East Germany from Czechoslovakia, and am fluent in a minor Scandinavian language (Danish) spoken by only 5.5 million people in the world.

Fui abogada de inmigración y profesora de derecho en Nueva York, pero actualmente estoy jubilada y vivo en San Miguel de Allende, México, con mi esposo. Anteriormente fui co-autora de varios libros sobre derecho y política migratoria, actualizados anualmente, y autora de cientos de artículos sobre derecho migratorio y movilidad global, publicados en diversas revistas jurídicas y académicas, y en algunas pocas publicaciones de gran difusión. Fui productora ejecutiva de «Las Abogadas», un documental estrenado en 2022 sobre abogadas que defienden los derechos de los solicitantes de asilo en la frontera de Estados Unidos. Actualmente escribo una biografía sobre mi difunta madrastra, una mujer judía neerlandesa que pasó tres años de su adolescencia escondida de los nazis durante la Segunda Guerra Mundial.

Soy ensayista. Nací en la Estridentópolis, también conocida como Xalapa. Por breves lapsos he habitado en Argentina, un lugar que me fascina por sus calles y personas. Para mí, ensayar es como nadar en una alberca olímpica; voy de crol, me suspendo en la horizontalidad hasta que mis pulmones necesitan detenerse, controlar la respiración y observar mi entorno con los googles empañados. Ganadora del Premio Nacional al Estudiante Universitario (2020), en ensayo y relato; y Premio Punto de Partida (2022; 2024; 2025) en ensayo y crónica. He sido beneficiaria de premios importantes nacionales como el PECDA y FONCA. Recientemente, antologué el libro Escrituras de pantano. Andamiajes ensayísticos. Algunos de mis textos pueden leerse en revistas como Punto de Partida, Casa del Tiempo, Círculo de Poesía, Punto en Línea, entre otras. Mi fascinación por Agnès Varda la lleva a considerarse una espigadora de la palabra. 

I am an essayist. I was born in Estridentópolis, also known as Xalapa. I lived briefly in Argentina, a place that fascinated me with its streets and people. For me, writing essays is like swimming in an Olympic pool; I do the crawl, hang horizontally until my lungs need to stop, control my breathing, and observe my surroundings through fogged goggles. Soy periodista especializade en Derechos Humanos y Activista LGBT+ de Chihuahua. Considero que el periodismo debe ser una herramienta para el cambio social, y por eso dedico mi trabajo a conservar y elevar la memoria de la población de la diversidad del norte del país. Fundó Altavoz LGBT+ en el 2021, medio especializado en historias de la población LGBT+, hecho desde la ciudad de Chihuahua. Mi trabajo ha sido impulsado por programas como el Professional Fellowship for Emerging Media Leaders del International Center for Journalists (2024) y la iniciativa ‘Exprésate’ de la International Women’s Media Foundation (2022). Formo parte de la Red Latinoamericana de Periodistas Jóvenes de Factual / Distintas Latitudes desde 2019. Como periodista, he aprendido que lo que le da un verdadero valor al trabajo es la capacidad de contar desde la realidad esos aspectos de la naturaleza humana que tanto nos atrapan en la ficción. Hoy en día mi mamá sigue siendo su primera editora.

I’m a journalist specializing in human rights and LGBT+ activist from Chihuahua. They believe journalism should be a tool for social change, and therefore dedicate their work to preserving and elevating the memory of the diverse population of northern Mexico. They founded Altavoz LGBT+ in 2021, a media outlet specializing in stories about the LGBT+ community, based in the city of Chihuahua. Their work has been supported by programs such as the Professional Fellowship for Emerging Media Leaders from the International Center for Journalists (2024) and the ‘Exprésate’ initiative from the International Women’s Media Foundation (2022). They have been part of the Latin American Network of Young Journalists of Factual / Distintas Latitudes since 2019. As a journalist, they have learned that what gives true value to work is the ability to tell, from reality, the aspects of human nature that so captivate us in fiction. Today, their mother continues to be their first editor.

Crecí en un pueblo lleno de milpas y barrancas. Soy licenciada en Estudios Latinoamericanos y saxofonista. He publicado textos en revistas como Punto de Partida, Luvina, LIJ Ibero, Casapaís, La Jornada Semanal, y en las antologías Una bolsa de semillas. Ciencia ficción feminista en Abya Yala (Coding Rights, 2025) y Liminales III (Casa Futura Ediciones, 2025). En 2024 gané la categoría “C” (Posgrado) del Premio de Literatura Epistolar Cartas a Rosario, organizado por la UNAM, y en 2025 mi manuscrito Sueño con tu cuerpo eléctrico, fue ganador del Premio de libro de cuentos de ciencia ficción Máquina de futuros, organizado por la UAEM. Actualmente coordino el club de lectura de ciencia ficción Gatos Galácticos y soy becaria del Fondo Nacional para la Cultura y las Artes (FONCA) en la categoría “Novela”. Me gustan los rompecabezas, andar en bicicleta y hacer listas de pendientes. 

I grew up in a town full of maize and ravines. I have a Bachelor’s degree in Latin American Studies and I’m a saxophonist. I’ve published texts in magazines such as Punto de Partida, Luvina, LIJ Ibero, Casapaís, La Jornada Semanal, and in the anthologies Una bolsa de semillas. Ciencia ficción feminista en Abya Yala (Coding Rights, 2025) y Liminales III (Casa Futura Ediciones, 2025). Soy Diego. Nací y crecí en la cada vez más insólita Ciudad de México. Sobrevivo aquí a pesar de siempre añorar la calma de los espacios abiertos y los jardines. Fué en alguno de esos lugares naturales donde nació mi necesidad de escritura, que hoy se desenvuelve en formas poéticas y ensayísticas. Estoy siempre en búsqueda de ideas y temas nuevos. Actualmente me entusiasman las dimensiones contemporáneas de la poesía documental. En UTV espero afinar mi sensibilidad y escritura, cosa no imposible entre el horizonte de Tepoztlán y el talento de mi tutor y compañerxs. Aunque he estado pocas veces en el sureste, mis favs absolutos son la cochinita pibil y los cenotes yucatecos.

I’m Diego. I was born and raised in the increasingly extraordinary Mexico City. I survive here despite always yearning for the calm of open spaces and gardens. It was in one of those natural places where my need for writing was born, which now unfolds through poetic and essay forms. I am always in search of new ideas and topics. Currently, I am fascinated by the contemporary dimensions of documentary poetry. At UTV, I hope to refine my sensitivity and writing—a goal that seems entirely possible between the horizon of Tepoztlán and the talent of my tutor and classmates. Although I have only been to the southeast a few times, my absolute favorites are cochinita pibil and the Yucatán cenotes.

Fiction with Ayegül Savas

I am a fiction writer, marketing professional, and art history lecturer based between Minneapolis and Mexico City. I recently completed the Novel Certificate Program at Stanford University and hold an MA from the University of Chicago. I am interested in how works of art can facilitate expression and create ambiguity, and be used as a more literal structure through which to shape a work of fiction. Beyond my professional work, I am a classically trained singer specializing in early and contemporary music. When I’m not working or writing, I love spending time cooking, going to museums, and building train sets with my two-year-old son.

Soy escritora, profesional del marketing y profesora de historia del arte viviendo entre Minneapolis y la Ciudad de México. Recientemente completé el Programa de Certificación de Novela en la Universidad de Stanford y tengo una maestría de la Universidad de Chicago. Me interesa cómo las obras de arte pueden facilitar la expresión y crear ambigüedad, y cómo pueden servir como una estructura más literal para dar forma a una obra de ficción. Además de mi trabajo profesional, soy cantante con formación clásica, especializada en música antigua y contemporánea. Originally from South Africa, I came to Mexico just over two decades ago as a young English teacher, and it has been home ever since. I now work in education, writing content for English language learning, while my creative work explores the human experience—often my own—through a blend of research and introspection.

I have a deep appreciation for the natural world, and most mornings begin with my dog Oli among the mesquite and huisache trees of San Miguel de Allende, in a landscape that echoes my first home.  As I wander, I try to make meaning of the worlds—new and old—that shape me.

Originalmente de Sudáfrica, llegué a México hace poco más de dos décadas como maestra de inglés y desde entonces este país maravilloso ha sido mi hogar. Hoy trabajo en el ámbito educativo, escribiendo contenido para la enseñanza del inglés, mientras que mi escritura creativa explora la experiencia humana —a menudo la mía— mediante una mezcla de investigación e introspección.

Tengo una profunda apreciación por la naturaleza, y la mayoría de mis mañanas comienzan con mi perro Oli entre los mezquites y huizaches de San Miguel de Allende, en un paisaje que me recuerda a mi primer hogar. Al caminar, intento descifrar los mundos —nuevos y antiguos— que me han formado.

Soy originaria de Ciudad de México, donde estudié la licenciatura en Interpretación de conferencias y trabajo también como traductora. Este año tomé dos diplomados, uno en Escritura Creativa de NOX Escuela de Escritura Creativa, avalado por la Facultad de Letras Españolas de la Universidad Veracruzana. El segundo en Corrección de Estilo Profesional y Consultoría Editorial de la Academia de las Artes de Escritura y estoy trabajando en mi proyecto final, sobre el proceso mental de la interpretación simultánea para corregir el discurso en la lengua de llegada, para producir un discurso en la lengua de salida correcto y entendible. Tengo publicaciones en diversas antologías y revistas y mi primer libro de cuentos está en busca de su hogar. Me gusta escribir principalmente historias fantásticas, maravillosas, extrañas. Siempre busco ponerme retos, probar con voces, tonos, estructuras que no he escrito antes, que parecen difíciles de lograr, porque quiero superarme. Mezclo diferentes mitologías con el mundo real, ambientes conocidos con elementos inesperados, personajes con los que es fácil identificarse, tomar elementos bien conocidos para darles nueva vida. Ah, y también soy comunicadora animal.

I come from Mexico City, where I got my degree in Conference Interpreting and I work as an interpreter and translator. This year, I completed the NOX Creative Writing Diploma program, endorsed by the Department of Literature at Universidad Veracruzana. I also completed the Professional Copyediting and Editorial Consulting Diploma Program at the Academia de las Artes de Escritura, where I am working on my final project, focused on the mental process that occurs during simultaneous interpretation to correct speech in the original language with the aim of producing speech in the target language that is correct and understandable. Some of my short stories have been chosen for different anthologies and magazines; my first book is now doing the rounds in search of its home. I mainly write strange, fantastical and marvelous stories. I constantly challenge myself to use new voices, tones, structures, things that seem difficult to do, to better myself. I like to combine mythologies with the real world, known environments with the unexpected, taking relatable characters and well-known elements to breathe new life into them. Oh, and I am also an animal communicator.

Soy escritora de literatura fantástica y ciencia ficción. Me interesa explorar la soledad, la pérdida y los límites entre lo que sentimos y lo que vivimos. Estudié Estudios Latinoamericanos en la UNAM y el diplomado de Creación Literaria Xavier Villaurrutia del INBAL. Mi escritura busca las emociones fuertes: imagino tormentas, rayos rompiendo el cielo y olas contra riscos, metáforas de fuerzas que no podemos controlar. Entre cielos infinitos, mares tempestuosos y ruinas que hablan de lo que amamos y perdemos, vivo rodeada de libros, gatos y música; escribo dejando que cada historia me lleve a lugares inesperados. Puedo parecer seria, pero quienes me conocen descubren mi risa, mi curiosidad y mis palabras atropelladas. Lo que pocos adivinarían sobre mí es que, detrás de cada historia intensa, sigo siendo alguien que se sorprende con la armonía de una luz encendiéndose a medianoche en la ciudad y que cree que vale la pena defender la belleza en el mundo. 

I’m a writer of fantasy and science fiction. I’m interested in exploring loneliness, loss and the boundaries between what we feel and what we experience. I studied Latin American Studies at the National Autonomous University of Mexico (UNAM) and completed the Xavier Villaurrutia Creative Writing Diploma program at the National Institute of Fine Arts and Literature (INBAL). My writing seeks out powerful emotions: I imagine storms, lightning tearing through the sky and waves crashing against cliffs, metaphors for forces beyond our control. Amidst infinite skies, tempestuous seas and ruins that speak of what we love and lose, I live surrounded by books, cats, and music; I write letting each story take me to unexpected places. I may seem serious, but those who know me discover my laughter, my curiosity and myr rapid-fire words. What few would guess about me is that, behind each intense story, I remain someone who is amazed by the harmony of a light turning on at midnight in the city and who believes that beauty in the world is worth defending.

Soy una escritora originaria de Tijuana, Baja California, que a través del ensayo autobiográfico y el testimonio, escribo sobre el cuerpo enfermo, la memoria y las dinámicas familiares, explorando sus resonancias políticas y afectivas. Ganadora del II Premio Internacional de Cuento Horroris Causa (2023), soy autora del ensayo Volcanes silenciosos, publicado en la decimoquinta edición de la revista Casapais (2025). Apasionada estudiosa de las estructuras narrativas, mi alter ego es un gato polaco que escribe reseñas literarias y promueve la lectura de autoras latinoamericanas. 

I’m a writer originally from Tijuana, Baja California, who, through autobiographical essays and testimonials, writes about the ailing body, memory, and family dynamics, exploring their political and emotional resonances. Winner of the II Premio Internacional de Cuento Horroris Causa (2023), I’m the author of the essay “Volcanes silenciosos,” published in the fifteenth edition of Casapais magazine (2025). A passionate student of narrative structures, my alter ego is a Polish cat who writes literary reviews and promotes the reading of Latin American women authors.

Como muchos tijuanenses, llegué de otra ciudad hasta Tj para crecer asimilando desde ahí, con todos los sentidos, una vida hecha de fronteras: entre uno y otro idioma, entre mar y ciudad, territorios y gente. En ese ámbito descubrí la poesía como un lenguaje universal con el que las personas pueden hablarse más allá del tiempo y el espacio, una forma de espiritualidad, y un raro espejo de la naturaleza donde el ser humano se confronta, se descubre, se inquieta bien y, a veces, se rescata.

Like many people from Tj, I arrived from another city to grow up and assimilate there, using all my senses to experience a life made of borders: between languages, between the sea and the city, territories and people. In this environment, I discovered poetry as a universal language through which people can communicate beyond time and space, a form of spirituality and a rare mirror of nature where humans confront, discover and question themselves, sometimes finding redemption.

Fiction with Aysegül Savas

I am a writer living in Los Angeles. My work has appeared in the Los Angeles Review of Books, T Magazine, MUBI notebook, and Michigan Quarterly Review. I have an MFA from Washington University in St. Louis, where I won the Carrie Scott Galt Writer’s award. Other accolades include being shortlisted for the Disquiet Literary Prize, long listed for the Ploughshares Emerging Writer’s Contest, and a semi-finalist for the Fine Arts Work Fellowship. I have received support from the Sewanee Writers’ Conference, Disquiet International Conference, Tin House, and NY State Summer Writing Institute. My fiction is interested in the narcissism of suffering and the complexity of familial relationships. I’m currently writing a novel and a short story collection. In the past, I’ve worked at a small press, on a farm, in a restaurant, and as a tutor. I love swimming, especially in lakes.

Fiction with Sheree Renée Thomas

I am a science fiction and fantasy writer, Clarion West ’23 alum, and Associate Editor at Uncharted Magazine. Originally from West Virginia, I now call Philadelphia home. I’m Professor of Spanish at a regional university, where I teach language classes, seminars in Latin American literature and film, and general education courses in global science fiction and fantasy. My 2021 monograph, ARTELETRA: Latin America in the Sixties and the Politics of Going Unnoticed (Purdue UP), received Honorable Mention from the LASA Southern Cone Studies Best Book Prize. My short fiction has appeared in Daily Science Fiction, Utopia Science Fiction, and Metaphorosis, among others. In 2024, I published my debut novel, A Valley to Harness (Two Doctors Media Collaborative). This rural dystopia follows three queer protagonists who, in a world wrecked by climate change and ecofascism, discover whether it is too late to act. When I’m not dodging the never-ending kisses from my pit-mix, I’m usually baking something sweet or tinkering with simulated cities and theme parks.

Actualmente, soy profesor de español en una universidad regional, donde imparto clases de lengua, de literatura y cine latinoamericanos y de la ciencia ficción y fantasía globales. Soy poeta, historiador y periodista colombiano, radicado en Bogotá. Estudié la maestría en escrituras creativas de la Universidad Nacional de Colombia y más tarde publiqué dos poemarios, Música para aves artificiales y Música de los abismos moleculares, y también un libro de ensayos íntimos sobre punk, fracaso, adolescencia y nostalgia alrededor del disco Enema of the State. Me interesa la poesía como espacio de trabajo para explorar las intersecciones entre saberes como la historia, la música, la mística, la economía o la física y la escala íntima, ridícula y lírica, donde la vida y el lenguaje cotidiano se vuelca en la experiencia social. Enlisto entre los placeres de la vida tomar café de especialidad, ver comedias románticas, ir al gimnasio y bailar salsa, de preferencia brava y en estilo colombiano.

I am a Colombian poet, historian and journalist, based in Bogotá. I received a masters degree in creative writing from the Universidad Nacional de Colombia and later published two books of poems, Música para aves artificiales and Música de los abismos moleculares, as well as a book of intimate essays on punk, failures, teenage years and nostalgia, partly based on the album Enema of the State. I am interested in poetry as a workspace to explore the intersection of different areas of knowledge such as history, music, mysticism, economy or physics and the intimate scale, both ridiculous and lyrical, where daily life and language become part of social experience. I count among the pleasures of life drinking specialty coffee, watching romcoms, training at the gym and dancing salsa, especially salsa brava in Colombian style.

My current project is a memoir-in-essays about growing up amid an echo of generational trauma and alcoholism, in a culture where alcohol is as ubiquitous as it is damaging. I am also a copywriter, a ceramic sculptor, a novice film photographer, and a bit of a hot head.

I have been a journalist covering immigration issues at the San Diego-Tijuana border since 2016. I worked at The San Diego Union-Tribune for more than seven years, and am known nationally for my work on the U.S. asylum system and border policies. I am a co-founder of Daylight San Diego, and launched Beyond the Border News in 2024. When I’m not doing journalism, I teach capoeira and dance, and go for walks with my dog Corcholata.

Fiction with Aysegül Savas

I am a fiction writer, musician, and dominatrix living in New York City. I am also an undergraduate student in Columbia University’s Creative Writing department. Currently, I am working on my first novel as well as an album of songs I worked on with my late father. My writing project works with themes of loneliness, aging, illness, control, and power and is based in the intersections of sex work and caregiving. I am particularly interested in spaces where money and care converge. Along with writing and making music, I enjoy reading, drawing, dancing, and picking wildflowers.

Soy escritora de ficción, música y dominatrix radicada en la ciudad de Nueva York.  Estoy estudiando mi licenciatura en el departamento de Escritura Creativa en la Universidad de Columbia. Actualmente estoy trabajando en mi primera novela y en un álbum de canciones que compuse con mi difunto padre. Mi proyecto literario explora temas como la soledad, el envejecimiento, la enfermedad, el control y el poder, y se centra en la intersección entre el trabajo sexual y el cuidado de personas. Me interesan especialmente los espacios donde convergen el dinero y el cuidado. Además de escribir y componer música, disfruto leyendo, dibujando, bailando y recogiendo flores silvestres.

Nací en Saltillo, Coahuila, en 1997. Soy poeta y guionista. Cursé la licenciatura en Letras Hispánicas en la Universidad Autónoma de Nuevo León y el Diplomado en Guión Cinematográfico en el CCC. Me interesa la exploración del lenguaje y la escritura desde la diversidad, como una forma de celebrar las diferencias y abrir nuevas maneras de mirar el mundo. He publicado Mamá, el campo, Matunuk, 1950, Envilecidas como hienas miramos la espesura de ese cielo, el libro para infancias Gallo, el planeta estalla (ilustrado por Israel Barrón) y, recientemente, Spleen mexa. Mi trabajo ha recibido reconocimientos como la beca de la Fundación para las Letras Mexicanas, el Sistema de Apoyos a la Creación y Proyectos Culturales (Fonca), el PECDA Coahuila, el Vigésimo Premio Hispanoamericano de Poesía para la Infancia, el VIII Premio Iberoamericano de Poesía Joven Alejandro Aura, el Premio Nacional Dolores Castro y, en 2025, el Premio Nacional Ramón López Velarde.Algunos de mis textos han sido traducidos al inglés y al portugués. I was born in Saltillo, Coahuila in 1997. I’m a poet and scriptwriter. I have a Bachelor’s in Hispanophone Literature from the Universidad Autónoma de Nuevo León and a Diploma in Screenwriting from the CCC. I’m interested in the exploration of language and writing as a way to celebrate differences and open new ways of looking at the world. I’ve published Mamá, el campo, Matunuk, 1950, Envilecidas como hienas miramos la espesura de ese cielo, the children’s book Gallo, el planeta estalla (illustrated by Israel Barrón), and recently, Spleen mexa. I have taught English and Comparative Literature at Columbia, Yale, Vassar, NYU and Barnard. In 2015, I published Poetry and Politics of Decolonization: Tagore, Yeats, Senghor, Césaire, and Neruda. I study the interaction of literature and development, especially in the Americas, during the 20^th century. I have written poetry all my life, but published very little. My involvement with immigrant cultures in New York has led me to work with ID Studio Theater Performance and Research Center in the South Bronx, adapting and translating new plays. In 1983, I married the writer Ved Mehta, and have two children and three grandchildren. I lived with Campa Indians in the high jungle of the Peruvian Amazon. Working across cultures and languages has always fascinated me. I am committed to fairness, compassion, justice. I sing; I ride; I run across fields.

Magdalena Arias Vásquez is a bilingual writer and translator. Her English-language poems have been published in AGNI, Poetry Northwest, among others. Her Spanish-language poetry has been published in the Antología V del Festival Internacional del Libro de Nueva York (FILNYC). She was a PEN America Emerging Voices Fellow, and has received recognition and support for her work from organizations such as Brooklyn Poets and AWP. Her translation work has been recognized by the American Literary Translators Association (ALTA). As a Spanish to English and English to Spanish translator, she has translated poetry and other literary texts featured in Revista Anfibia in Argentina and Asymptote Journal. Born and raised in Panama City, Panama, she currently lives between the Isthmus and New York.

Escritora mexicana nacida en la Ciudad de México. Soy licenciada en Literatura y creación literaria por Casa Lamm, donde aprendí a desarrollar más a profundidad la pasión que he tenido desde niña por contar historias y leer desmesuradamente. Mis temas preferidos son la memoria de los espacios, la infancia, lo simbólico, la naturaleza y lo extraño. Además, me gusta trenzar mi escritura con mis otras dos grandes aficiones: el cine y la música. 

A lo largo de los años he escrito y colaborado con diversas revistas y medios creativos y, en el año dos mil veintitrés, obtuve el segundo lugar en el Concurso Punto de partida UNAM con mi cuento Un fantasma me sigue en primavera. En otoño de 2024 publiqué, junto con Editorial Iridiscencias, la antología Túneles, cabellos y otros miedos, una colección de textos que exploran las diferentes dimensiones de mis temores más profundos. 

Hoy en día me dedico de lleno a escribir, a caminar mi ciudad como si apenas la estuviera conociendo y a beber café en cuanto Sanborns se me atraviese. 

Mexican writer born in Mexico City. I hold a degree in Literature and Creative Writing from Casa Lamm, where I learned to further develop the passion I’ve had since childhood for storytelling and voracious reading. My favorite themes are the memory of spaces, childhood, symbolism, nature, and the uncanny. I also enjoy weaving my writing with my other two great passions: film and music.

Over the years, I have written for and collaborated with various magazines and creative media outlets, and in 2023, I won second place in the UNAM Punto de Partida Contest with my short story “A Ghost Follows Me in Spring.” In the fall of 2024, I published, with Editorial Iridiscencias, the anthology “Tunnels, Hair, and Other Fears,” a collection of texts that explore the different dimensions of my deepest fears. Today I dedicate myself fully to writing, walking around my city as if I were just getting to know it, and drinking coffee whenever I come across a Sanborns.

Soy una persona de letras que se ha convertido en un ronin de la industria editorial: sin hogar, pero con un domicilio fiscal. He sido corrector, editor y lector profesional. Durante más de diez años me he movido entre manuscritos, plazos imposibles y decisiones (no siempre mías) que cambian un texto para siempre. Al menos el camino ha sido divertido en la mayoría de las ocasiones y me ha permitido conocer y leer gente increíble. Escribí un libro híbrido entre novela corta y compilación de cuentos: Nadie recogerá tus restos cuando te avientes al metro, publicado en Colombia en 2022. Ahora mismo me propongo explorar los límites de mi propia narrativa para afilarla lo más posible. Algunos detalles que nunca incluyo en un CV son que soy aficionado al buen café y al ajedrez. Me encantan los juegos de mesa y los de rol, quizás porque ahí también se construyen mundos, se negocian reglas y se aprende a seguir adelante con las consecuencias de cada jugada.

I’m a person of letters who’s become a ronin of the publishing industry: homeless, but with a tax address. I’ve worked as a proofreader, editor, and professional reader. For over ten years, I’ve navigated in between manuscripts, impossible deadlines, and decisions (not always mine) that change a text forever. At least the journey has been fun most of the time, and it has allowed me to meet and read incredible people. I wrote a hybrid book, part novella and part short story collection: Nadie recogerá tus restos cuando te avientes al metro, published in Colombia in 2022. Right now, I’m focused on exploring the limits of my own narrative to hone it as much as possible. Some details I never include on a CV are that I’m a fan of good coffee and chess. I love board games and role-playing games, perhaps because they also involve building worlds, negotiating rules, and learning to live with the consequences of each move.

He publicado poesía, ensayos y cuentos en Gatopardo, Nexos, Tierra Adentro, C de Cultura y Casa País. Estudié una maestría en Escritura Creativa, con enfoque en poesía, en The New School. He dado clases de Creación Literaria para infancias y adultos en Brooklyn Poets, Writopia, WriteOn y Mi Valedor. Actualmente trabajo en Poets House, una biblioteca especializada en poesía ubicada en el sur de Manhattan. Para mi primer poemario, estoy investigando y escribiendo sobre la industria de la perfumería y su trasfondo cultural y ecológico. I’m an award-winning accountability and enterprise reporter at The Fresno Bee in Fresno, California, the center of California’s agricultural heartland. During my four-and-a-half years at The Bee, Ii’ve covered a range of issues including immigration enforcement, the expansion of California’s largest ICE detention facility and labor abuses in the agricultural industry. In May 2025, I was nominated for a James Beard Media Award for my 2024 investigation into a string of workplace fatalities at a California poultry processing facility tied to a high-end poultry brand. Formed and raised in the Arizona desert, I fell in love with my ancestral land of Mexico after pursuing a Fulbright-García Robles fellowship in Guadalajara, Jalisco more than a decade ago. When not reporting, reading, or lounging with mycat, Mowgli, I’m probably swimming or baking a fruit-forward dessert.

I belong to the first wave of Dalit Futurists in English-language fiction, and am the first author from India to be nominated for the Hugo and Nebula Awards. My fiction and commentary have been published in The Gollancz Book of South Asian SF, The Blaft Book of Anti-Caste SF, The Hindustan Times, Words without Borders,  Strange Horizons Magazine, Nightmare Magazine and the Rubin Museum’s Spiral Magazine, among others, and have been translated into Bengali, Hindi, Malayalam, German, Polish and Mandarin. 

I have three masters degrees from three continents, two tattoos in ancient languages, the spice tolerance of a five-year-old, and am an average but indomitable bachata dancer.

I’m an alumna of the Iowa Writers’ Workshop and the recipient of numerous awards, including a Paul & Daisy Soros Fellowship for New Americans and the Taylor-Chehak Prize in Fiction. I am currently a PhD student in English at the University of Pennsylvania, where my research focuses on brownness in hemispheric American literatures. I live in Philadelphia, where I can often be found tending to my terrariums.

Tengo la obsesión de encapsular en historias el dolor de las distancias físicas e inmateriales entre las personas, el absurdo absoluto en el que estamos inmersos, la tragedia política contemporánea, la bendición que es estar condenados a la soledad y de alguna manera encontrar el humor en ello. En el camino escribí “Dinero para cruzar el pueblo,” que ganó el Premio Nuevo León de Literatura, y “Tesis de la Soledad,” que obtuvo el Premio Nacional de Cuento Corto Eraclio Zepeda. Lector intenso y disperso, tragón voraz de frijoles, escuchón, despeinado crónico y esclavo a las exigencias siempre cambiantes de mis dos perritas a las que amo a rabiar.

I’m a writer of short stories and novels. I’ve lived in Veracruz, where I was born, in Louisiana, in Monterrey, and now in Mexico City. These diverse geographies and my unsuccessful foray into journalism have shaped my vision and search. I am obsessed with encapsulating in stories the pain of physical and intangible distances between people, the absolute absurdity in which we are immersed, contemporary political tragedy, the blessing of being condemned to solitude, and somehow finding humor in it all. Along the way, I wrote “Dinero para cruzar el pueblo” (Money to Cross the Town), which won the Nuevo León Literature Prize, and “Tesis de la Soledad” (Thesis of Solitude), which won the Eraclio Zepeda National Short Story Prize. An intense and scattered reader, a voracious devourer of beans, a good listener, chronically disheveled, and a slave to the ever-changing demands of my two beloved dogs.

I’m the co-founder of the New England Hoodoo Society.  I am the current Radical Reversal Poet in Residence at the Suffolk County House of Corrections in Boston, Massachusetts. Nací en el Eje Cafetero de Colombia, entre montañas que unidas parecían una sola y de la que corría un río helado que nos hacía temblar. Soy periodista, escritora y narradora visual interesada en la ficción documental, la fotografía expandida y el ensayo; mi obra suele estar atravesada por la relación entre naturaleza e intimidad: historias propias o ajenas que encuentran un lugar de tejido en el paisaje que también sucede adentro, eso que está vivo y nos dice algo sobre el mundo que habitamos.

He obtenido algunos reconocimientos como Mejor crónica, dos veces en los premios Te Muestra; premio Joven cronista en Ciudad Paz; mención de honor en la beca Michael Jacobs de crónica de viajes de la fundación GABO, y reconocimiento de investigadora destacada por DW Akademie. He colaborado con medios digitales e impresos como la revista de arte y diseño Bacánika (Colombia), Dos Aires (México, Colombia, Francia), la plataforma de investigación Consejo de redacción y la revista de periodismo narrativo Vice Versa (Nueva York). Algo que no recuerdo nadó a mi costado es mi primer proyecto de largo aliento, en el que exploro desde la ficción documental diferentes zonas de Colombia y su relación con el agua.

I was born in the Coffee Belt, a region of Colombia between mountains that together seemed like one and from which ran a frozen river that made us shiver. I am a journalist, writer and visual narrator interested in documentary fiction, expanded photography and essays. My work usually draws from the relationship between nature and intimacy: personal or other people’s stories weave their way to the landscape that also happens inside —which is alive and tells us something about the world we inhabit. 

My work has been recognized with awards such as two Best Chronicle Prizes at the Te Muestra Awards; the Young Chronicler Award in Ciudad Paz; and a mention of honor from the Michael Jacobs scholarship for travel writing from the GABO Foundation; I also received the Outstanding Researcher distinction from the DW Akademie. I have contributed to media outlets including the art and design magazine Bacánika , the Latin culture magazine Dos Aires , the research platform Consejo de Redacción (Colombia), and the narrative journalism magazine Vice Versa. Algo que no recuerdo nadó a mi costado is my first long-term project, in which I explore different areas of Colombia and their relationship with water through documentary fiction.

I currently live in Bogotá and am a freelance narrator for different media outlets and environmental and human rights NGOs. My days are usually very calm, and I like to cook and play sports.

I’m originally from Scotland and have called Mexico home since 2007. By day, I am a publisher at Macmillan Education, where I’m part of a fantastic team who create brilliant English language learning materials for preschool and primary learners. By night, I write historical fiction. My first published short story, “His Lordship Must Not Know”, appears in Issue 14 of Causeway / Cabhsair: A Magazine of Irish and Scottish Writing. I am querying my first novel – a historical romance set in newly-independent Mexico, about finding love and belonging a long way from home. In between, I can usually be found swimming, free-diving, or out for a walk with my very spoiled former street dog.

De día, soy editora en Macmillan Education, donde formo parte de un equipo fantástico que crea materiales brillantes para la enseñanza del inglés a niños de preescolar y primaria. I’m a poet, translator from the Spanish, and visual-poetry artist living in Fort Worth, Texas. I spent nine years practicing karate with my son, and now practice wu style tai chi. My work has been nominated for a Pushcart Prize and published in various literary journals, as well as in two chapbooks of poetry, Red Cardinal, White Snow (2024) and Walk Like the Bird Flies (2023). Currently, I am revising a manuscript of poems and visual-poetry about the wives of Pancho Villa. The history of the Mexican Revolution keeps my head spinning. 

Soy poeta, traductora del español y artista de poesía visual viviendo en Forth Worth, Texas. Pasé nueve años practicando karate con mi hijo y ahora practico tai chi estilo wu. For the past 15 years, I’ve been the misfit in my career as a technology consultant: the essayist working undercover as a project manager, the poet sneaking assonance into emails to the engineers, the novelist crafting an elaborate alternate reality in which projects were on schedule and under budget. In my early school days, I took every opportunity to sneak creative writing into places it didn’t belong: submitting a biology paper in the form of an illustrated chapbook, and a chemistry lab report disguised as a sci-fi short story. My love of writing found a perfect home at the University of Michigan–Ann Arbor, where I won poetry slams and Hopwood Awards for fiction and essay as an undergraduate English major. At the University of Wisconsin–Madison, I earned a Master’s degree in English and worked as a ghost writer and editor after hours. Over the last 10 years I’ve chronicled two of my life’s passions, food and travel, as a wildly unreliable narrator at WorldsWorstFoodBlogger.com. For the last few years, a novel inspired by Louis de Bernières and Aleksandar Hemon has been percolating in my mind, and thanks to a long Thanksgiving weekend unplugged in the frozen wilderness, it is finally making its way to the page. My focus at Under the Volcano 2026 is a collection of personal essays on young widowhood, an experience which I do not recommend.

En la Universidad de Wisconsin-Madison, obtuve una Maestría en Inglés y trabajé como escritora fantasma y editora fuera de horario. Durante los últimos 10 años, he contado dos de las pasiones de mi vida, la comida y los viajes, como una narradora extremadamente poco fiable en WorldsWorstFoodBlogger.com. Durante los últimos años, una novela inspirada en Louis de Bernières y Aleksandar Hemon ha estado dando vueltas en mi mente, y gracias a un largo fin de semana de Acción de Gracias desconectada en la gélida naturaleza, por fin está llegando a la página. I have five siblings with whom I’ve always made up words and languages, which is probably what led me to writing. I have a BA in English and psychology from Williams College, where I was the 2025 Hubbard Hutchinson Class of 1917 Memorial Fellow in writing. I have also been awarded the Benjamin B. Wainwright Prize in fiction, the Bullock Poetry Prize of the Academy of American Poets and the Brooklyn Poets Fellowship. Currently, I’m working on a short story collection in which I describe the post-Soviet Kazakh landscape as overcrowded with ghosts.

I am a writer, ethnographer, and cultural critic from Memphis, Tennessee, a haunted city perched on a bluff of the Mississippi River on unceded Chickasaw Nation land. A child of civil rights parents with Mississippi plantation roots, I was fascinated with the gothic labor histories in my kinfolks’ hands and the stories they told of the dead. When I had my own dead to claim—or rather, when my dead claimed me—I entered my family’s tradition of storytelling, where I am learning, but as yet am still a baby. My ethnographic profiles of the living and the dead have been published in several places, including Rolling Stone, Scalawag, Believer, Oxford American, The New York Times Magazine and Glamour. My work has been nominated for a National Magazine Award and has earned a National Association of Black Journalists award. I am currently at work on an ancestral memoir, Surely You’ll Begin the World, which follows the lives, deaths and fantastic afterlives of three fathers and the living daughters who tend their memories. I am obsessed with all things related to Patricia Highsmith’s Tom Ripley, that great class trespasser who was determined, in his own way, to even the playing field.

Soy escritora, etnógrafa y crítica cultural de Memphis, Tennessee, una ciudad misteriosa enclavada en un acantilado del río Misisipi, en territorio no cedido de la Nación Chickasaw. Hija de padres activistas por los derechos civiles con raíces en las plantaciones de Misisipi, me sentí fascinada por las historias de trabajo, de carácter gótico, que sus familiares me contaban, y por los relatos que narraban sobre los muertos. Cuando tuve que reclamar a mis propios muertos —o mejor dicho, cuando mis muertos me reclamaron a mi— me adentré en la tradición oral de mu familia, donde aún estoy aprendiendo, pero todavía soy principiante. Mis perfiles etnográficos de vivos y muertos se han publicado en diversas revistas, como Rolling Stone, Scalawag, Believer, Oxford American, The New York Times Magazine y Glamour. Mi trabajo ha sido nominado al Premio Nacional de Revistas y ha sido premiado por la National Association of Black Journalists. Actualmente trabajo en unas memorias ancestrales, Seguro que tú empezarás el mundo, que narra  las vidas, muertes y fantásticas historias del más allá de tres padres y las hijas que conservan su memoria. Me apasiona todo lo relacionado con Tom Ripley, el personaje de Patricia Highsmith, aquel gran transgresor de clase que, a su manera, se empeñó en igualar las condiciones.

Soy escritora de horror y fantasía oscura de ascendencia trinitense de la Ciudad de Jersey, Nueva Jersey.
