Born in Mexico City in 1949, is a renowned poet with a body of work that has earned him all the major literary prizes of Mexico and then some, including the Carlos Pellicer, the Xavier Villaurrutia and, most recently, el Premio Nacional de Ciencias y Artes and the Premio FIL de Literatura en Lenguas Romances. He holds a chair in Spanish Language Poetry at the Universidad Autónoma de la Ciudad de México and also teaches under the auspices of the Fundación Octavio Paz.   He lives in Mexico City with his wife, the writer Verónica Murguía.

He returns to Under the Volcano for our 20th anniversary season after a brief respite during which he was much missed.
