Fiction with Ayşegül Savaş
I’m a writer from Kazakhstan, currently residing in New York City. I’m interested in how memory lives, individually and nationally, specifically in post-colonial contexts. My favorite things to write about are grandmothers, childhoods, small towns, little mythologies, politics of language, and ghosts. I have five siblings with whom I’ve always made up words and languages, which is probably what led me to writing. I have a BA in English and psychology from Williams College, where I was the 2025 Hubbard Hutchinson Class of 1917 Memorial Fellow in writing. I have also been awarded the Benjamin B. Wainwright Prize in fiction, the Bullock Poetry Prize of the Academy of American Poets and the Brooklyn Poets Fellowship. Currently, I’m working on a short story collection in which I describe the post-Soviet Kazakh landscape as overcrowded with ghosts.
Soy una escritora de Kazajstán, actualmente radicada en la ciudad de Nueva York. Me interesa cómo sobrevive la memoria, tanto a nivel individual como nacional, especialmente en contextos poscoloniales. Mis temas favoritos para escribir son las abuelas, la infancia, los pueblos pequeños, las mitologías cotidianas, la política del lenguaje y los fantasmas. Tengo cinco hermanos con quienes siempre he inventado palabras e idiomas, lo que probablemente me impulsó a escribir. Soy licenciada en Literatura y Psicología por Williams College, donde fui becaria Hubbard Hutchinson Class of 1917 Memorial Fellowship en escritura creativa. También recibí el Premio Benjamin B. Wainwright de ficción, el Premio Bullock de Poesía de la Academia de Poetas Estadounidenses y la Beca de Brooklyn Poets.
