This master class is for writers working on either short stories or longer fiction. We’ll talk a good deal about shape and structure and creating narrative tension– what a story wants to mean and how it goes about it. I’m always focused on how time determines a story, so we’ll pay attention to duration and pacing. Those working on novels or linked stories will be asked to write tentative summaries or annotated tables of contents and to think about how the parts will connect to the whole. I want us to always be thinking about what is most distinctive in a work and how to keep that from getting lost.
