UNDER THE VOLCANO is a modular program of writing master classes that convenes every January in Tepoztlán, Mexico, an hour outside Mexico City in the foothills of the great volcanoes. Our award-winning faculty spans the English-speaking and Hispanic worlds.

The core writing program is open to poets, short story writers, novelists, journalists, librettists, memoirists and essayists, as well as those working on projects that challenge traditional genre forms. Optional add-on’s include a two-week extension residency and flash master classes.

Registration for the core master classes is limited to eight, with acceptance based on an 8-10 page writing sample. Both accomplished and emerging writers are strongly encouraged to apply.

Our alumni have published novels, stories, memoirs and articles, been admitted to top MFA programs, signed with leading literary agents and won prizes and honors that include a National Book Award, the Premio Nacional de Novela Tamaulipas, the Premio Quimera Literatura Queer and the Write Stuff competition at the London Book Fair.

Financial aid and full fellowships are available to qualified applicants.

2019 UTV Reading Fellows

Under the Volcano Reading Fellows are exciting writers in the early stage of their careers who will offer additional written critique to participants in the prose workshops and stay on to write during the extension residency. They will be available to meet one-on-one with extension residents who want additional feedback on their work.  We are thrilled to welcome the 2019 UTV Reading Fellows as part of our expanding community of writers.

“The dream always is to feel that writing is your only job in life. At Under the Volcano that dream became real.”

TIM MACGHABANN, Ireland

“The time I spent in Tepoztlán working on my novel was magical. It recharged my batteries so that I could finally get through my first draft.”

REYNA GRANDE, California

“Under the Volcano is not just about the writing. It is a personal journey. Never has a combination of place, people and programme felt so powerful and inspiring.”

NATALIE HART, United Kingdom

“Under the Volcano is unforgettable. It gave me time and space to breathe and write. I made lasting relationships in such a short time and have so much creative momentum now that I’m home.”

JACQUI CORNETTA, New York

“Friends ask me why I go to Mexico for a writing workshop. I’m exposed to people, writers, and ideas that are outside the context of the typical literary writers workshop that exists in the US.”

IAN GOLUB, Washington, DC
