The Grace Paley Fellowship

The Grace Paley Fellowship, “for a woman writer of any age whose writing Grace Paley would have encouraged,” covers full tuition to any of our English-language master classes (fiction, poetry or memoir), our two-week extension residency, RT airfare to Mexico, 24 nights accommodation and most meals.

Requirements: the online application, a recent c.v., a cover letter describing your reasons for applying, a 25-page sample of your writing and two letters of recommendation from people who know your work. Applicants must also provide written proof of their availability to remain in Tepoztlán through the entire two-week extension residency and are expected to work on their creative project, not outside commitments. Family members are not permitted.

The deadline for submissions is August 15, 2018.

Winner to date: Tanea Lunsford Lynx

The Margot Adler Fellowship

The Margot Adler Fellowship for Innovative Journalism, established in honor of the extraordinary late NPR reporter, recognizes “a young working journalist whose commitment to contemporary issues would resonate with the life work of Margot Adler.” The recipient will attend our English-language investigative journalism master class with Pulitzer-Prize winning reporter David Barstow of the New York Times. The award coverage is identical to that of the Grace Paley Fellowship.

Requirements: the online application, a cover letter describing your reasons for applying, four published samples of your work totaling no more than 20 pages and two letters of recommendation from professionals in the field. Applicants must also provide written proof of their availability to remain in Tepoztlán through the entire two-week extension residency and are expected to work on their creative project, not outside commitments. Family members are not permitted.

The deadline for submissions is September 1, 2018.

The Grace Paley and Margot Adler fellowships are for English-language writers, with a preference for writers based in the United States. Proof of citizenship or residency is required for consideration. Both fellowships cover tuition for the appropriate core workshop and 24 nights accommodation in a local hotel or hosting situation. The two-week extension residency is part of all named fellowships.

The Sandra Cisneros Fellowship

Finally, we are accepting nominations for the Sandra Cisneros Fellowship, which recognizes a US Latino/a writer of outstanding literary promise and leadership ability. Names and contact info should be sent to director@underthevolcano.org. Same conditions as above.

The deadline for nominations is August 15, 2018.

Winner to date: Ana Portnoy Brimmer

Recipients for all Under the Volcano fellowships are chosen by committee on the basis of their accomplishment and literary promise and are required to submit a concise statement of their goals for the program and beyond. All fellowship recipients are also required to submit a final report to the program director and to offer a public reading from their work during their time in Tepoztlán.

Deadlines

A cover letter and supporting materials for all fellowships must be received no later than the specified deadline for each.
