WHAT A FABULOUS BIRTHDAY WE HAD!
CELEBRATING 15 YEARS OF UNDER THE VOLCANO
In January 2018, we held our 15th cycle of writing master classes with a stellar faculty and participants from Mexico, the US, India, Ireland, the UK, Cuba, Colombia, Turkey, Puerto Rico, Argentina and Canada.
In addition to our core master classes in fiction, poetry and memoir, this year we added investigative journalism with Pulitzer Prize winning-reporter Ginger Thompson.
We awarded eight full fellowships, including new ones honoring writers Grace Paley and Sandra Cisneros, as well as journalist Margot Adler.
We also offered full or partial financial aid to roughly 70% of our participants, continuing our commitment to identify emerging talent from around the world.
Among the special events held throughout our birthday season:
Investigative journalism dialogue with Ginger Thompson (US) and Alejandra Xanic (Mexico) at Centro Cultural Pedro López Elías in Tepoztlán.
A literary showcase with UTV authors at La Sombra del Sabino in Tepoztlán.
Public master class with renowned Mexican poet David Huerta at Centro Cultural Pedro López Elías in Tepoztlán.
The world premiere of Codex, a multimedia minichamber opera by Felipe Pérez Santiago with lyrics by Magda Bogin, commissioned by the Robert & Lenore Davis Foundation of New York.
Presentation and reading of our anthology at the Jardín Borda in Cuernavaca with UTV faculty and alumni contributors.
