México Canta is a week-long intensive for experienced and emerging composers culminating in a showcase concert of new vocal work in English or Spanish. Held every January as part of Under the Volcano‘s annual writing retreat in the village of Tepoztlán, an hour from Mexico City, the program offers daily workshops and tutorials with master composers and the chance to collaborate with writers in residence at the same time.
The focus of México Canta 2013 is the art song, or lieder. Lyrics by UTV poets, novelists and playwrights will provide the texts for vocal pieces shaped under the expert guidance of resident composers Anthony Davis (US) and Felipe Pérez Santiago (Mexico).
Rising star Mexican singers and professional musicians will be on hand to perform scores in progress, with two days of rehearsal prior to a gala closing concert in Tepoztlán that will be recorded for CD.
