Established in 2003, Under the Volcano is a weeklong program of writing master classes that convenes every January in Tepoztlán, Mexico. Intended for committed writers, whether published or not, the program is open to poets, short story writers, novelists, playwrights, librettists, essayists and journalists, as well as those working on projects that challenge traditional genre lines. Projects in Spanish may also be pursued in special cases, provided participants are fully able to read and critique work in English.
Founder and director Magda Bogin also offers cyber workshops throughout the year for writers with books in progress and other projects requiring consultation.
“The unexpected beauty of the village…left me spellbound; I’m still walking those cobblestoned streets, up the steep hills, turning a corner and stopping, dumbstruck at the bright colors of the ‘papel picado’ paper streamers festooning the streets and houses…All of it an enormous gift.”
