About

Cultural Journalism with Jonathan Levi

“If a writer wants to spend a week or more in a nurturing, magical, mystical environment, and if he/she is committed to their craft, then Under the Volcano is not to be missed.”

Established in 2003, Under the Volcano is an 8-day program of writing master classes that convenes every January in Tepoztlán, Mexico. Intended for committed writers with projects underway, the program is open to poets, short story writers, novelists, journalists, librettists, memoirists and essayists, as well as those working on projects that challenge traditional genre lines. Projects in Spanish or other languages may be pursued in special cases, provided applicants are fully able to read and critique work in English.  Our core faculty spans the English language world, and past participants have come from Australia, Canada, Eritrea, Italy, Mexico, South Africa, Spain, Turkey, the United Kingdom and the United States.

We encourage all participants to take advantage of our extended residency option, which allows master class members to stay on through the month of January to write as part of a supportive, mentoring community.

Founder and director Magda Bogin offers cyber workshops throughout the year for writers with books in progress and other projects that would benefit from consultation.
