About

Cultural Journalism with Jonathan Levi

“If a writer wants to spend a week or more in a nurturing, magical, mystical environment, and if he/she is committed to their craft, then Under the Volcano is not to be missed.”

Established in 2003, Under the Volcano is a ten-day program of writing master classes that convenes every January in Tepoztlán, Mexico. Intended for committed writers with projects underway, the program is open to poets, short story writers, novelists, journalists, librettists, memoirists and essayists, as well as those working on projects that challenge traditional genre lines. We have fiction workshops in both English and Spanish, and both our journalism and memoir master classes are open to Spanish-language writers, provided applicants are fully able to read and critique work in English. Projects in other languages may be pursued in special cases.  Our core faculty spans the English-language world and Mexico. Recent participants have come from Australia, Canada, Eritrea, Italy, Mexico, Puerto Rico, South Africa, Spain, Turkey, the United Kingdom and the United States.

We encourage all participants to take advantage of our extended residency option, which allows master class members to stay on to write as part of a supportive, mentoring community.
