Established in 2003, Under the Volcano is a weeklong program of writing master classes that convenes every January in Tepoztlán, Mexico. Intended for committed writers, whether published or not, the program is open to poets, short story writers, novelists, playwrights, librettists, essayists and journalists, as well as those working on projects that challenge traditional genre lines. Projects in Spanish may also be pursued in special cases, provided participants are fully able to read and critique work in English.
Founder and director Magda Bogin offers cyber workshops throughout the year for writers with books in progress and other projects requiring consultation.
“Under the Volcano far exceeded my expectations or my imagination. It was probably due to combining creative people of diverse backgrounds, with incisive teachers that push you, and the indefinable effect of the town itself. I wrote a piece in a style that was new to me, and discovered a new voice.”
