Under the Volcano is deeply grateful to the many donors and sponsors who make it possible for outstanding writers from around the world to attend our January master classes in Tepoztlán. Our fundraisers are exciting literary events that showcase our faculty and alumni while also offering guests the opportunity to contribute to our general scholarship fund or to provide sustained support to especially gifted writers in the form of named fellowships.
Our May benefit at the famed Posada del Tepozteco featured an auction of work by some of Mexico’s top contemporary artists. Their donated sculpture, photography, drawings and paintings helped raise enough funds for us to offer partial scholarships to roughly a third of the participants in next year’s workshops. The event catalog below is testament to their talent and generosity and contains links to the artists’ websites.

We were also delighted to present an exhibit and sale of books by UTV authors, courtesy of La Sombra del Sabino, and a bilingual reading with novelist Sandra Cisneros (featured guest writer 2016), poet Francisco Segovia (poetry in Spanish, 2017), UTV Director Magda Bogin and two rising stars from January 2016, Mexican short story writer Mariana Roa and Irish poet Tim MacGhabban.
As part of this special occasion, we awarded the first Malcolm Lowry Prize for outstanding literary promise to Mariana Roa and Tim MacGhabban, who each received a gift certificate for books.
Please consider making a tax-deductible contribution to Under the Volcano International to help talented writers and journalists from Mexico and elsewhere attend our January 2017 master classes.
